N'y allons pas par quatre chemins: le reggae n'est pas mon style de prédilection. Au fil des années, il a été difficile de pénétrer cette musique si particulière, de par son rythme, sa diversité, ses origines, et surtout la manière dont certains artistes ont pu essayer de le revendiquer comme influence, tout en la dénaturant, malheureusement... Donc, pouvoir chroniquer ce disque des Français de Youngsax relevait de la gageure, mais dès la première écoute, le fait est là: il s'agit bien d'une musique élaborée, sensée, intelligente et superbement composée et produite. Oui, ce reggae est classieux, et admirable, et réconcilie l'auditeur suspicieux avec le genre, sans aucune hésitation.

La première force du groupe réside dans le fait de transporter chacun vers des contrées ensoleillées et magnifiques, mais surtout de le faire voyager, dans tous les sens du terme. Un retour aux sources, un côté roots très prononcé et admirable de maîtrise et de sens; mais également, une manière assez particulière de laisser chaque chanson couler, aller d'elle-même, de manière vivante et subtile. Pour chaque auditeur recherchant ce besoin de détente, d'atmosphères envoûtantes, la musique ici offerte est délicate, sensuelle parfois, mais surtout accessible. Ce qui était loin d'être gagné, tant le style semble fermé et réservé à une certaine élite. Loin de le dénaturer, le groupe lui rend ses lettres de noblesse, en permettant de découvrir un univers musicalement captivant et magique, intelligemment structuré et profond. On revient à ce qui fait le charme du reggae, à ses fondations mêmes: des vibrations, un flow irrésistible et doux, une invitation au voyage et à la (re)découverte. Il faut ici saluer le talent de ce jeune groupe, qui parvient si brillamment à composer ces merveilleuses et complexes chansons, tout en gardant une approche directe et rigoureuse.

Et au-delà de cette apparente simplicité, on trouve la réponse à cet envoûtement et intérêt soudains dans les arrangements des chansons; ceux-ci sont complexes, forts, et tout simplement impressionnants. Axer la plupart des morceaux autour de cuivres tantôt jazzy, tantôt blues ou rythmant la musique en consolidant le travail apporté par les guitares et percussions, donne à l'ensemble un sentiment d'originalité hors normes; sentiment qui se trouve à nouveau bousculé lorsque l'intervention d'une flûte traversière se fait prenante, tout en survol et dialogue avec la trompette, afin de créer des instrumentaux que l'on croirait tout droit sortis des grandes heures des seventies. Une telle harmonie est superbe et entraînante, et donne envie de communiquer (voir ce moment musical intense où chaque instrument s'exprime, et donne son language à entendre, se donnant entièrement et profondément). Instants rares et précieux, voire inestimables; trouver dans ce style un tel renouveau, et tant de singularité, semblait il y a peu encore impossible à présumer.

De la même manière que pour les instruments, le travail vocal reste impeccable et harmonieux: tantôt reggae, tantôt ragga, mais aussi revêtant des consonnances soul grâce aux voix féminines, ou émouvant, il nous permet d'apprendre, de découvrir, de voir et entendre ce que signifie la musique ici donnée. Et tout devient alors communicatif: des textes aux harmonies, des dialogues vocaux à la complémentarité avec les compositions, chaque chanson se structure d'elle-même, revêt sa propre identité, son propre flow. Il ne reste plus qu'à vibrer, se laisser porter, courir vers ces contrées musicales si belles et impressionnantes. Et surtout, partager cette énergie; car celà, Youngsax y parvient sans aucune difficulté. Même les plus réticents devront l'admettre; leur musique se doit d'être respectée, sur de nombreux points. Techniquement, ethniquement, et surtout, intensément... Rien ici n'est en trop, chaque instrument se marie et se confond aux autres, et apporte solidité aux harmonies vocales, véritables prouesses mélodiques. On a envie de soleil, de confidence, d'intimité, mais aussi le désir immense de se dépenser et de donner le meilleur de soi-même. Parfois intimistes, parfois éloquentes, les musiques ne laissent jamais indifférent. Alors on s'incline...

Youngsax parvient à nous redonner goût au reggae et à ces musiques exotiques dont le groupe se veut  être un des porte-parole; ce qui est réussi haut-la-main. Donc, comme il a déjà été dit, le reggae n'est pas mon style de prédilection; mais avec Youngsax, il y aura une voie à suivre, une ouverture d'esprit à partager avec eux, et pour celà, ainsi que pour cette remarquable musique, merci à eux... Ils sont à suivre, à découvrir, et à aimer; et ils y parviennent, le doute n'est plus permis...

I won't lie to you; most of the time, I don't like or listen to reggae music. Year after year, it has bee difficult for me to go through this particular style, because of its rhythm, diversity, musical roots, and most of all, the way a few artists wanted to be considered as people influenced by this music, but tearing it apart from its real essence... So, writing a review about French band Youngsax seemed to be really hard and risky; but while listening to their EP for the first time, I could only think I was listening to a great and sensational music. All here was intelligent, wonderfully composed and arranged. So, all I can say is that this reggae music is wonderful and clever, and brings comfort to every doubtful listener (like me), without hesitation.

First of all, the band's strength can be heard in the amazing way they make us travel through sunny and magnificent places; all here is a sensitive and true journey. We are back into the reggae and ragga roots, and the band wonderfully understands the meaning and talent everybody needs to play this special music and share it with others. So, each song is subtle and contains a beautiful and soft flow, then lives and go its own way. For every listener who really wishes to find peace, comfort, hypnotizing atmospheres, this music is like a sensual and meaningful gift which is generously given to us. And it is also risky, because reggae music first seems to be hard to share and give, and only understood by few people. But far from making it sound like FM or easy-listening music, Youngsax goes back to the essence and roots of this style, and allows us to understand and be introduced to this amazing, magical, well-structured and profound sound. So, one is brought back to the reggae roots: all here is about vibrating, softly and wonderfully floating, travelling and discovering. One can't but admire the band's talent to compose wonderful and complex songs, while keeping a straight and intelligent vision of the style.

Then, apart from this seemingly-like simplicity, one can find an answer to the captivating atmosphere of this music thanks to the song's arrangements; they are complex, strong, and really impressive. All songs seem to be based on sometimes jazzy, then blues or rhythmical horns, which bring an inner strength to all other instruments, like guitars or drums; and all if this sounds really original and surprising. Then, while hearing an astonishing flute, sometimes answering to the trumpet, the listener feels like being back to wonderful and captivating 70's instrumentals. Such a perfect and entertaining harmony has to be admired and deeply considered as a real talent, and brings the desire to communicate (go and listen to this amazing piece of music in which every instrument finds its own language and brings intensity and depth to the song) and share. These moments are really rare and precious nowadays; and finding a kind of renewal of reggae music, with such singularity, first seemed to be impossible to be heard...

In the same way, vocals are perfect and wonderfully tuned: sometimes sounding like reggae, sometimes ragga or soul, thanks to a deep, profound and moving female voice, they allow us to learn what this style really is, discover, see and hear the meaning of this music. Then all is brought to be shared and given: words and tunes, vocal dialogues perfectly tuned with music, give a single and original structure to each song. All we have to do now is feel the vibrations, travel, and run through these beautiful and peaceful musical countries. And above all, share these feelings with others; because Youngsax easily succeeds in this hard and perilous way. Even most doubtful listeners will agree: this music has to be respected, and technically, ethnically, and intensively understood... Nothing here is superficial, and every instrument finds its own place and identity among others, then gives a real structure and basis to vocals and strongly built melodies. One only desires to go to sunny places, and find confidence, intimacy, then dance and give the best of oneself. Sometimes intimate, sometimes powerful, music never lets us feel indifferent; so, all we have to do is admire and congratulate the band for giving such beauty and sense to us...

Youngsax is a really amazing band, because they make us feel comfortable with reggae music, and give taste to this exotic and sunny style; they now are one of the most interesting and senseful reggae bands. So, as I wrote in the beginning of this review, reggae was not my favourite style at all; but thanks to Youngsax, I became more open-minded and interested, passionate and curious, and I really want to thank them for what they did to me... They will have to be followed, admired, and loved; and all I can say is that they perfectly succeed in these ways, and will forever do...
