Alasèv - Les Envoûtées
Il y a quelques mois maintenant, cet EP des Français d'Alasèv s'est copieusement fait détruire dans les pages d'un webzine bien connu des amateurs de musique indépendante; or, en écoutant ce même disque de nombreuses fois, on se demande ce qui est passé par la tête du critique de cette même page (avis partagé par de nombreuses personnes ayant apprécié l'album à sa juste valeur, d'ailleurs), tant ce disque est riche de découvertes, d'émotions et de subtilités musicales. Ce qui frappe avant tout chose, c'est la diversité et la complexité des chansons à consonnance rock d'Alasèv; loin de se contenter du simple format coupet-refrain, chaque composition va plus loin, se retient, explose, explore, et cherche à aller plus loin encore que la précédente. Au fil d'influences hispaniques et de consonnances presque post-rock, on tient là un sublime écrin musical dans lequel guitares, batteries et basses s'entrechoquent, se cherchent, se parlent. A la manière de l'excellent groupe américain The Tea Party sur l'album The Edges Of Twilight, les musiciens d'Alasèv témoignent d'un profond respect pour leurs instruments et pour les influences quasi-orientales qu'ils intègrent dans les compositions. Sans surcharge ou éxagération, la musique file, implose, puis devient délicate avant de nous replonger dans un tonnerre maîtrisé de sons saturés et de cordes suturées. Au milieu de ces déferlantes rock du plus bel effet, la voix de Mika, dans son aspect à la fois embrumé, mélodieux et faussement doucereux, se fait cri, arabesque vocale subtile et superbe. Elle fouille les tréfonds de la musique, s'y intègre sans aucun artifice, et se marie à un contexte pourtant difficile; exercice de style aussi bien qu'émotion latente et superbe, l'intégration des parties vocales est plus proche de l'effleurement que de l'effraction, alors que l'ensemble devient sensiblement et artistiquement maîtrisé, et s'épanouit à chaque écoute. Lors d'un duo superbe et d'un échange entre voix masculine et féminine, le dialogue se prolonge, se retrouve, se partage, et se donne à vivre; aussi surprenant qu'intelligent, ce passage devient à lui seul une réelle démonstration du talent musical d'Alasèv; chercher encore plus loin, plus fort, et donner, saigner, se vider, dans un rock mélancolique impressionnant et innovant. Certains se sont dits désenvoûtés par ce disque; peut-être faudrait-il tendre une oreille plus attentive, afin de découvrir chaque subtilité d'une oeuvre dont le point de départ promet beaucoup, et que l'on suivra les yeux fermés; il reste, à n'en pas douter, encore beaucoup à découvrir venant d'Alasèv, mais nous serons là, c'est une certitude...

A few months ago, this album from French band Alasèv has been terrifically reviewed in a well-known independent webzine; but, while listening to it again and again, the question is, what went through the reviewer's mind while writing those horrible words (and lots of listeners who took the time to listen to the album still wonder what has happened then...), as this EP is so full of musical discoveries, emotions, and subtilities. While listening to these songs for the first time, one is absolutely struck by the diversity and complexity of the rock songs Alasèv are performing; far from only playing formated rock songs, the band needs more and more, and each song is full of restraintance, explosion, experiments, and needs to go further from the last one, again and again. Thanks to Spanish-like and almost post-rock influences, their music allows guitars, drums and bass to find a self language and communicate, and share. As for US band The Tea Party in their excellent album called The Edges Of Twilight, Alasèv testify for a deep and amazing respect for their own instruments and oriental influences which can be heard in a few songs. Without overdubbing the entire album, music takes a sweet and soft way, then implodes and then turns to a delicate sound before exploding again into overdrived tunes and waves. In such a powerful musical atmosphere, Mika's foggy, tuned and soft vocals become a fascinating shout and arabesque running through the music. They explore each musical ambience and find their own place into it, even if this tour-de-force first appears to be really hard to succeed in; as hard as a musical exercise, though as emotional and amazing, vocals sound better laid on music than overwhelming it, and then help in creating a completely sensitive and artistically perfect musical universe which find a new meaning and value in each listening. And while hearing a male-female vocal duet in the middle of this EP, a perfect dialogue appears to be created and shared; as surprising as intelligent, this particular moment is a perfect example of the band's talent. Music has to be explored further and further again, and musicians have to give more and more, bleed on instruments, and explode through this impressive and new melancholy rock music. One once felt uncaptivated by this album; but one was certainly wrong and should give it deep and intelligent attention, in order to discover each subtle moment contained in Alasèv's music; this is only the beginning, and wherever the band is about to go after such a masterpiece, we'll be here, as there is still a lot to discover thanks to this amazing band, without doubt...
